REDFORD TWP. (WWJ) -- One person is dead following a fiery, chain-reaction crash on I-96 in Redford Township, Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the driver of a Ford Focus was speeding eastbound on the freeway, near Telegraph Road, when the car slammed into the back of a slow-moving pickup truck stuck in exit ramp traffic.

The violent impact spun the truck into an SUV, while the car burst into flames, police said.

The crash happened at around 2:45 p.m.

First responders pulled the trapped driver from the burning car and rushed them to a local hospital, where they died from their injuries.

People in the other two vehicles were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Investigators said speed appears to have played a role. It's not yet clear of alcohol or drugs were involved.

Police are asking any witnesses to contact Redford Township PD Traffic Bureau at 313-387-2500.
