DETROIT (WWJ) -- A freeway crash became a freeway shooting Sunday afternoon when one motorist left the scene only to return with a gun, striking the other driver in the arm before fleeing a second time.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m., two drivers were involved in a crash on northbound Southfield Freeway (M-39) just after the I-96 interchange.

Following the crash, the pair began arguing, until one of the driver's fled the scene.

The remaining driver called a relative for a ride home. While they waited for the tow truck in the relative's car on the side of the freeway, the first driver returned with a gun and shot at their vehicle.

After firing multiple rounds, the assailant drove off again.

One of the bullets struck the targeted driver in the left arm, requiring treatment at a local hospital. The relative was unharmed.

Michigan State Police closed northbound Southfield Freeway at I-96 around 4 p.m. in order to investigate the shooting. During that time, canine unites were able to recover seven 9mm bullet casings.

The freeway was reopened a little after 6 p.m. Sunday evening.

MSP First Lieutenant Mike Shaw commented on the incident, saying it was unfortunate that the drivers were "not... able to de-escalate the conversation afterwards," and calling the shooting "cowardly."

In a Twitter update, MSP said that their detectives are working on some leads from the crime scene but that the suspect is still on the loose.

Anyone who witnessed the encounter or has information about the shooting is asked to call 855 MICH-TIP. You can also contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
