Driver slams into utility pole on Woodward in Highland Park, killing passenger

HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) A driver slammed into a telephone pole in Highland Park and killed his passenger on impact, police said.

Authorities said the crash happened on Thursday, August 27, around 5:30 a.m. on northbound Woodward Ave. near the Davison.


WWJ's Charlie Langton reports a driver traveling at a "very high rate of speed" in a Chevy Equinox crossed over the center line and crashed "full force" into the utility pole.

"Woke up, heard a loud slam," a nearby resident told Langton.

Police said the passenger, a 36-year-old man from Detroit, died at the scene. The driver is hospitalized, listed in serious condition.

Michigan State Police assisted Highland Park Police at the scene. According to authorities, alcohol is believed to be a factor.

As of 8:45 a.m., north and southbound Woodward remains closed at the Davison for the crash investigation.
