EAST JORDAN (WWJ) - It was anything, but a routine day for officers in Northern Michigan who stopped a driver for a traffic violation on Monday -- only to discover the man behind the wheel was wanted for murder in another state.
The East Jordan Police Department said Brian Jamare Kelly was taken into custody after officers pulled the man over on Maple Street by State Street after a check of his license plate yielded surprising information.
In addition to murder with a deadly weapon, the officers discovered Kelly had an outstanding warrant for multiple of charges in Las Vegas, including accessory to murder, first degree kidnapping with a deadly weapon, conspire to commit kidnapping, robbery with a deadly weapon, conspire to commit robbery, destroying evidence, possession of substance with intent to sell, conspire to violate controlled substance act, transporting a controlled substance and grand larceny.
Police Chief George Lasater told UpNorthLive that the incident only highlights the hidden dangerous officers face -- in even simple traffic stops.
“You never know if they [are] wanted or just somebody coming home from the store, you know, minding their own business,” Lasater said. “So, it’s always important to be aware of your surroundings.”
Kelly was taken to the Charlevoix County Jail and arraigned in Charlevoix County on Thursday. He is currently awaiting the extradition process to Nevada.
