WAYNE COUNTY (WWJ) - Drivers in western Wayne County can expect a new travel headache where officials have closed two major freeway ramps over emergency repairs.
Michigan Department of Transportation's Diane Cross told WWJ's Sandra McNeill that inspectors have discovered a problem with bridge supports along the I-275 and M-14 ramps.
If it is not immediately fixed, Cross warned that the potential dangers to drivers could be "huge."
"We've got to get traffic off of that," Cross added.
Cross said the I-275 northbound ramp to M-14 westbound is closed to traffic, as is the M-14 eastbound ramp to I-275 north.
"We're going to have to put up temporary supports to hold up that bridge and it's going to be probably at least a couple of weeks before we're going to be able to open it for traffic to use it.'
Officials closed the bridge immediately after the issues were found on Friday afternoon and Cross said it's already cause traffic nightmares.
"We've had construction on west 14, so sending all that traffic east on 96, you're down to one lane on 14 anyway and because of concrete pavement repairs, there are holes on that 96/14 onto 275 that we can't open to traffic," she explained.
That leaves only one lane open on westbound I-96 to M-14.
"Drivers just need to avoid that entire area if they can at all," Cross said.
Once the temporary supports are in the place, Cross said officials will work on a plan for a long-term fix.
It's not clear how long those permanent repairs will take.
