ROCHESTER HILLS (WWJ) - Police are searching for answers after a series of suspicious and dangerous incidents in Rochester Hills left several drivers with severe damage to their vehicles over the last week.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said at least five people have come forward so far to report a chunk of ice hit them while driving, with most of the incidents occurring in a small area on or near Tienken Road.
Michael Rota told WXYZ that he was driving back from the post office on Feb, 3 when ice struck his vehicle near Tienken and Brewster, causing him to swerve off the road and onto the shoulder.
"I saw the arm, I didn't see the ice being thrown, but I saw the arm," Rota told WXYZ. He said he is now looking at a $3,500 bill to repair the damage to his vehicle which he strongly believes was intentional.
"If it came off a tree, there would be a dent on the roof, the hood, maybe the windshield, but there was none of that," Rota continued.
The sheriff's office are beginning to suspect someone is behind the incident, as well as four others that have occurred within the last seven days.
A day before Rota's incident, a woman told deputies her vehicle was struck near Silverbell Road and Kern Road on Feb, 2. Another three people called and told similar stories to police, including University of Michigan student, Tala Alahmar.
Alahmar told WXYZ that she was lucky her encounter only left her with a scratch on her face after a chuck of ice came hurling through her windshield, knocking part of it out and leaving her covered in glass and ice.
"Thankfully, that day I had left my shade down when I was driving and it took a lot of the impact," said Alahmar.
She said the last thing she remembers before being hit was a white pickup truck speeding past her. Alahmar initially believed the incident was a freak accident until she came across comments about similar, suspicious events on the Nextdoor app.
"I kept reading the comments, saw that it happened to a lot of people, and that's when I filed a report with the sheriff's office," said Alahmar. "And I was told there's another case similar that happened on the same night, same street."
While there are theories about who may be behind the incidents, police stated they don't have a clear idea yet if anyone is even to blame.
At this time, deputies do not have a suspect in custody and none of the victims were able to come up with why they were allegedly targeted.
Deputies are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information about the case or anyone who believes they have had a similar encounter has been asked to come forward to the Oakland County Sheriff's office or Crime Stoppers at 1-800 SPEAK UP.
All tips are 100% anonymous and a reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
