WASHTENAW COUNTY (WWJ) - Emergency crews said almost half a dozen people were hurt after a wrong-way driver crashed on US-23 in Washtenaw County Tuesday morning.

The crash happened shortly after 8 a.m. and left US-23 closed for several hours, eventually reopening around 3:30 p.m., leaving residual backups in the area.

Huron Valley Ambulance officials confirmed a head-on collision in the southbound lanes of the freeway injured four people near Willis Road. Troopers later clarified the fifth victim was the wrong-way driver.

Two fire departments and four ambulances responded to the scene -- the injured were immediately rushed to Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti.

While ambulance officials said two victims were were in unstable condition while three are in stable condition, troopers clarified in a 12:30 p.m. update that all the victims had non-life threatening injuries.

Prior to the crash, tipster and driver Daryl Evans told WWJ around 10:30 a.m. that he had to get out of the way of a vehicle headed in the wrong direction on the freeway, just south of Dundee.

Evans said the driver appeared to be speeding and caused a semi truck and several other cars to drive into another lane to avoid being struck head-on.

WWJ reached out to Monroe County Dispatch who said officials were investigating the situation but did not release additional details.

Just before 11 a.m., Michigan State Police announced on social media that the southbound lanes of US-23 at Willis Rd. in Ypsilanti were shut down due to "a serious traffic crash."

While troopers initially said the vehicle was being pursued, in their most recent update they clarified that no pursuit was initiated when officials with the Monroe County Sheriff's Department were made aware of the wrong-way driver first reported near Dundee at around 8 a.m.

The driver hit several vehicles in Monroe County, but continued to drive on the wrong side of the road into Washtenaw County where Milan police saw the driver smash into four other vehicles near Willis Road.

Troopers said they believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
