(WWJ) If you pay your DTE Energy bill online, watch out for an extra fee.

Starting March 2, 2026, DTE confirmed it will be adding an extra $2.99 processing fee if you pay your bill with a credit or debit card.

If you don't want to pay the fee, there's a couple of ways around it. The easiest for many people would be to pay with a bank account. DTE customers can log into their account online and click on Add Payment Method to set this up.

The other option is to send a check or money order by mail to DTE, or pay in-person by cash or check at authorized retail locations like Kroger, Meijer, or Walmart service desks, or at DTE's own self-service kiosks. [Find in-person payment locations at this link.]

DTE said in a statement, provided to WWJ Newsradio 950: "At DTE Energy, we know that every dollar matters, and we’re committed to doing everything we can to keep energy costs as low as possible for the communities we serve across our state.

"A standard practice across many companies that use third-party processors, a small processing fee will apply to credit or debit card payments to cover charges from those payment processors – effective March 2, 2026. This fee goes directly to the processor and does not benefit DTE.

"By making this change, we ensure that only customers who choose to pay by card cover their costs, rather than all customers sharing those costs through overall rates."

If you're a customer enrolled in auto-payments, DTE said you can expect a notice of the increase soon. Customers will be asked to confirm their method of payment to reflect the new fee.
