DTE reportedly issuing $100 credits to eligible customers still without power Monday

(WWJ) -- DTE Energy is reportedly set to issue $100 credits to customers who were still without power Monday, nearly a week after the latest round of storms that swept across southeast Michigan.

There has been no estimate on how many customers will be eligible for the credit, but the utility plans to issue them some time in the coming days, according to a report from the Detroit News.

The decision comes just days after Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel called on the state’s two biggest utilities, DTE and Consumers Energy, to credit customers who have had to deal with extended outages caused by severe weather.

Nessel encouraged the companies to do so to help those who have lost food or had to seek alternative housing due to the outages.

Consumers had already announced some customers could receive $25 credits by filling out a form, but now DTE will reportedly be notifying their eligible customers about the credit.

There were roughly 65,000 DTE customers still in the dark Monday morning, according to the utility’s outage map.

Much of metro Detroit was hit by high winds and rain last week, one of just many storms this summer that have left flooding and power outages in their wake. Some areas experienced wind gusts of up to 70 mph during the most recent storms, while hundreds of thousands were left with no power amid a heat wave.

As of Thursday evening, 1,440 DTE customers were still without power, according to the DTE Outage Map. Most outages were contained to small pockets of fewer than 100 affected customers.
