EASTPOINTE (WWJ) A Macomb County teacher is on leave after he was arrested out of state and charged with possessing and transporting "child exploitation materials", school officials said.
Eastpointe Community Schools officials said, in a statement, that Martin Waskowski was taken into custody on Wednesday, December 3. He has been a teacher at Pleasantview Elementary School, on Toepfer near Gratiot, for three years.
School officials said Michigan State Police and the Department of Homeland Security informed them of Waskowski's arrest and the charges against him on Friday (December 5). FOX 2 reports the arrest occurred at a Vermont-Canada border crossing.
"Prior to this formal notification, the District had no knowledge of, nor received any allegations, related to this individual," the district's statement read.
The district put Waskowski on "immediate" administrative leave, "pending the outcome of the investigation"; officials said.
A long-term substitute has been assigned to the classroom, according to school officials.
School officials told WWJ they are "fully cooperating" with the agencies involved in the investigation. Homeland Security Investigations has established an email address for parents and guardians to report "any concerning behavior".
That email is: HSI-Waskowski-Investigation@hsi.dhs.gov
Social workers will also be made available to support students who have questions or concerns.
"...The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority," the statement read. "We take this matter extremely seriously, and regardless of the outcome of the criminal investigation, the District will continue to act in the best interest of the children at all times."
