Elderly driver escapes serious injury after crashing into semi pulling out of Walmart store in Commerce Township

(WWJ) A semi-truck driver was ticketed after his trailer was hit by a car Tuesday morning in Commerce Township, causing a morning drive traffic jam along Pontiac Trail near Haggerty.

The 87-year old driver of a Chevy Malibu hit the trailer as the semi was pulling out of the Walmart Supercenter onto eastbound Pontiac Trail around 7:15 a.m., according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Department.

The car driver was pinned inside his car and had to be rescued by Commerce Township firefighters. The man was taken to Henry Ford Hospital in Novi and evaluated for injuries that are believed to be minor at this time, according to the Sheriff's Department.

No other injuries were reported.

The driver of the semi-truck was issued a citation in connection with the crash.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office reminds motorists to use caution near business driveways and intersections, particularly when large commercial vehicles are entering or exiting roads.

The incident remains under investigation.
