ROYAL OAK TWP. (WWJ) – An elderly Ferndale woman is injured after being hit by an SUV while crossing the street Thursday afternoon in Royal Oak Township.

The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. in the area of Wyoming Avenue and 8 Mile Road, according to Michigan State Police.

The woman was walking across Wyoming at a crosswalk when she was hit by a Lexus SUV driven by an elderly Ferndale man. MSP officials did not release the ages of the victim or driver.

The woman was hit at the right front of the SUV and suffered “obvious head trauma from the impact,” according to MSP.

She was taken to the hospital for treatment, but officials did not disclose her condition.

Alcohol and speed do not appear to be a factor in the crash, according to police.

“It is important that we all share the road as a driver, pedestrian or bicyclist.” MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said on Twitter. “As a vehicle driver we must make sure to give pedestrians the right of way to cross the street safely while in the crosswalk. This could have been a lot worse.”
