Elderly man killed, 3 others injured in crash on US-23 in Monroe County

DUNDEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ) -- Authorities are still investigating what led up to a crash along US-23 in Monroe County Monday morning that killed an elderly man and left three other people injured.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says the crash happened along northbound US-23 just after 11:30 a.m. Monday when a 41-year-old Michigan Center man's Chevrolet van rear-ended a 2018 Hyundai Elantra near Brewer Road in Dundee Township.

Authorities say the driver of the Hyundai -- a 74-year-old man -- was slowing down as traffic had come to a stop due to a road closure in a construction zone. The driver of the Chevrolet slammed into the back of the Hyundai, which was in-turn pushed into a Nissan Rogue, which also hit a 2021 Mazda 6 in front of it.

The 74-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say a 59-year-old woman from Hanover inside the Nissan and a 50-year-old woman from Boca Raton, Florida, were both injured in the crash.

Those women, as well as the driver of the Chevrolet, were all taken to area hospitals for treatment, but authorities did not immediately disclose their conditions.

The northbound lanes of US-23 remained closed in the area for about four hours as crews investigated, but it has since reopened.

Police are still investigating the crash and say it is unknown whether excessive speed, alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash.

The names of everyone involved are being withheld at this time as authorities continue to investigate. Anyone who has information regarding the crash is asked to call 734-240-7541.
