ST. CLAIR COUNTY (WWJ) - A 85-year-old driver is dead in St. Clair County after police say he crashed into a tree and ended up in a yard late Monday evening.
The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office said the incident involved only one vehicle and occurred around 10:37 p.m. on River Road near Avalon Beach Ct. in Cottrellville Township on Aug. 14.
Deputies, along with the St. Clair County Road Commission, initially responded to the area on reports of a tree partially hanging over the road. While at the scene, a deputy began to suspect a vehicle may have struck the tree.
After further investigation, authorities found there was a crash and the vehicle, driven by a 85-year-old Marine City man, collided with the tree, left the road and eventually come to a stop in a nearby yard.
EMS and fire crews at the scene pronounced the man dead.
Authorities said River Road was closed for several hours as investigators worked to gather evidence. At this time, speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the wreck.
The man's identity has not been released by the sheriff's office pending notification of his family members.
The St. Clair County Accident Investigation Team is continuing to investigate. No other details have been released.
