DEARBORN (WWJ) -- An Eastern Michigan University administrator has been charged with indecent exposure after being caught driving naked and masturbating.

On Friday, September 2, Dearborn PD received cell phone footage of a man driving a black Jeep Wrangler on westbound Michigan Ave. near Miller St. The man was not wearing any clothes and was shown to be "touching himself."

The footage was sent to police by another driver who witnessed the inappropriate behavior.

Police identified the suspect as 62-year-old Michael Tew, a Dearborn resident. He was arrested at home on Wednesday, September 7.

Tew is an administrator and former professor at EMU.

Walter Kraft, the Vice President for Communications at EMU, provided a statement, as reported by WDIV:

“We are troubled and concerned about this reported incident. The individual involved has been a faculty member and administrator at the University since 1989. Upon learning about this matter from Dearborn Police yesterday, the University took immediate action and suspended the individual indefinitely, pending the outcome of the investigation and legal proceedings. They are not permitted to come to campus during the suspension. We are not aware of any inappropriate conduct or actions of this nature related to their work on campus.”

Tew was arraigned Friday morning and charged with both misdemeanor and felony counts of Indecent Exposure. The judge set his bond at $20,000.

Tew is scheduled to appear in court for a Probable Cause Conference on September 23, and a Preliminary Exam on September 30.

In a post on the Dearborn PD Facebook page, Police Chief Issa Shahin said, “This sort of conduct is illegal and will not be tolerated in Dearborn. I’d like to commend the concerned citizen for documenting the incident and bringing it to our attention.”
