BIRMINGHAM (WWJ) - U.S. Secretary of Energy and former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm said Michigan is poised to be in the forefront when it comes to electric vehicle (EV) investments.

Granholm spoke in front of a sold out crowd with The Detroit Free Press Breakfast Club, hosted by columnist Carol Cain. Held at The Townsend Hotel in Birmingham on Monday morning, topics included the future of energy and our climate.

"Sometimes you don't know that you are in the middle of history when you're in the middle of it," Granholm said. "And right now, we are IN the middle of this history-making change. And Michigan is the tip of the spear."

Michigan’s 47th governor said the state has lead when it comes to new automotive technology, with change coming faster than most people realize.

The Energy Secretary said this move to EVs does not need to mean job losses.

"There ARE fewer assembly jobs, clearly, for an EV," Granholm pointed out. "BUT, if we are smart about getting this full-battery supply chain, those are jobs that are additive jobs. And so, that's what's really exciting."

Granholm said $23 trillion is being invested in clean energy this decade alone and governments and businesses need to work together to win that investment.

Secretary Granholm provided Southeast Michigan business communities with a detailed analysis of the region’s most pressing issues and how it deeply impacts the Great Lakes State. Some other topics included clean energy, tax incentives for "Green Projects" and young talent in Michigan.

Those in attendance included high-profile CEOs and politicos.

Following the morning address, Granholm celebrated Juneteenth with a stop at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit.

Granholm has been the U.S. Energy Secretary for the Biden administration since 2021. She was Michigan's governor from 2003 to 2011 and our state Attorney General from 1999 to 2003.
