EASTPOINTE (WWJ) -- A 38-year-old suspect is in custody after it's alleged he stole from English Gardens, led police on a high-speed chase, and injured an Eastpointe police officer.
According to Eastpoint Police, at around 1:40 a.m. on Sept. 25, officers responded to a report of a suspicious man prowling inside the closed English Gardens on Kelly Rd. near 9 Mile Rd.
Dispatch informed responding officers that a landscaping truck and trailer were parked across the street.
Upon arrival, officers spotted the truck pulling away and conducted a traffic stop.
Police determined the unplated trailer was loaded with items taken from English Gardens.
That's when they ordered the driver to step out of the vehicle.
Instead of complying, police said the driver started the engine and accelerated while an officer stood at the driver’s door. The truck struck the officer, and the attached trailer ran over the officer's legs.
The injured Eastpointe officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment. There is no update on his condition at this time.
Police followed the truck into the City of Detroit, receiving assistance from the Warren and St. Clair Shores police departments along the way. During the chase, the suspect allegedly attempted to strike multiple police vehicles.
As the trailer broke apart, it littered the roadway with landscaping tools, causing damage to at least one police cruiser.
The chase ended when the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. He was arrested a short time later, treated for minor injuries at a local hospital, and booked into the Macomb County Jail.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the case and was expected to authorize charges sometime Friday. His name has not yet been released.
Eastpointe Police said, in a statement: "Eastpointe PD would like to thank Warren PD and St. Clair Shores PD for their assistance in this incident. Their help led to the successful arrest of the violent suspect."
