DETROIT (WWJ) - A 30-year veteran of the Detroit Police Department was sentenced on Tuesday to 15 months in prison for accepting cash bribes from a tow company totaling more than $3,200 over two years.

The former cop, Alonzo Jones, 55, was also sentenced to supervised release for two years after he completes his prison sentence as part of his plea deal.

Jones, who spent over 30 years with the Detroit Police Department, took five cash bribes from a towing company while he operated the Detroit Police Vehicle Auction.

Officials said Jones took $3,200 in bribes, with him accepting his last cash payout just before his retirement from DPD in May of 2021.

"Every new police officer takes an oath to uphold our laws and act with integrity. This officer broke that oath and his crimes are an affront to the citizens of Detroit and the honest officers of the Detroit Police Department who put their lives on the line to protect those citizens," said United States Attorney Dawn Ison said in a press release.

"This sentence shows our office’s commitment to aggressively pursuing police officers who use their trusted positions of authority to enrich themselves."

The bribery scheme was uncovered by "Operation Northern Hook," a government investigation into corruption within the government and the Detroit Police Department involving the towing industry and more.

Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation handled the operation.
