Employee recovering after Thanksgiving Day explosion at General Motors Factory ZERO plant

HAMTRAMCK (WWJ) A cylinder explosion at General Motors Factory ZERO Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant sent an employee to the hospital on Thanksgiving.

The Detroit Fire Department said the cylinder explosion happened around 12:30 p.m.—at the plant on Grand River at Mt. Elliot Street. One worker was injured.

Fire officials said the explosion was not EV related, but did not specify a cause.

According to General Motors (GM), the worker’s injuries are non-life-threatening. No details were released about the worker’s age or gender.

GM released the following statement: “…Safety is our overriding priority and we will continue to investigate the cause of the incident.”

GM calls Factory ZERO “the launchpad for (the company’s) multi-brand all-EV strategy” and “its first fully dedicated all-EV facility with contiguous battery assembly.” It opened in 1985, and spans 4.51 million square feet and 365 acres.
