DETROIT (WWJ) - One woman and one man were severely injured in an explosion Fright evening that happened in a lower level parking structure at Detroit's Henry Ford Hospital.
Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell told WWJ's Armetta Landrum that fire officials were first alerted to the explosion around 6:21 p.m. on Friday. Emergency crews responded to the scene at 2799 W Grand Blvd and found two victims of the blast.
Emergency crews responded to the scene at 2799 W Grand Blvd and found two victims -- the man had been able to get away from the vehicle while the woman was found on the ground, suffering from burns.
Both are being treated for their injuries. Fornell said the man was listed in temporary serious condition while the woman is in critical condition as of 10 p.m. Friday night.
Fornell said the man and the woman were transporting a hydrogen tank in the bed of their truck for a ballooning activity; the victims launch weather balloons as a hobby.
They were visiting at the hospital and had parked their vehicle in the lower level of a parking garage.
According to Fornell, the value to the hydrogen tank had not been fully closed and had been leaking. The hydrogen ignited when the victims started up their truck — the explosion blew glass out of an elevator over 100 feet away and caused major damage to the vehicles parked on their side.
The truck is said to be a total loss.
No other injuries were reported and there was no fire as a result of the explosion.
Fornell said a HAZMAT is on site to determine how to dispose of the hydrogen tank.
A statement about the incident was released by the Henry Ford Health System late Friday night:
"The underground parking garage at Henry Ford Hospital is temporarily closed after a pickup truck exploded earlier this evening. Two people were injured and are being treated in the Emergency Department. One is listed in good condition and the other is listed in temporary serious condition. They were at the hospital visiting a family member. The cause is under investigation by Detroit police and fire. The parking garage does not appear to have sustained any structural damage."
