Extreme shortage of school bus drivers means problems for Waterford parents

WATERFORD (WWJ) -- Parents in one Oakland County community are scrambling to figure out how to get their kids to and from school each day.

There's an extreme shortage of bus drivers right now in Waterford Schools, according to district officials. As a result, different bus routes are being canceled every day.

Administrators say their transportation department is implementing the daily cancellations, which will rotate throughout the district, and parents being notified. This means one route could be canceled one day, but then continue as normal the next.

The district said this is just a temporary change as they work to hire new bus drivers.

"We appreciate your patience as we navigate ongoing transportation staffing shortages and apologize for the disruptions," Waterford School District said, in a statement. "Beginning this Monday, Oct. 26, our Transportation department will implement daily general education bus route cancellations, rotating throughout the district."

Parents are urged to keep their eye on their emails for information and updates.

Kim, who was dropping off her kids off this morning at Mason Middle School, said no buses means her and her husband are forced to change their schedule.

But she said not all parents are able to do that.

"I worry about them. What are they doing? I don't know, what can they do? Is the school providing after school daycare? You know, I don't understand how they're doing it," she said. "Because there was a time where I was a single parent, and that would've not been...I couldn't have done it. There's no way."

Meanwhile, the district said it is "actively hiring" bus drivers.

Waterford Schools is urging anyone interested in the job to apply online at this link.
