MASON COUNTY, Mich. (WWJ) - A Holland couple and their two children were injured in a serious crash on the state's west side Tuesday afternoon after troopers said the wife lost control of their vehicle when her husband reached over and grabbed the steering wheel.

According to mLive, the family was traveling northbound through Mason County’s Pere Marquette Township on US-31 just before 4 p.m. when the crash occurred.

State police said the 29-year-old father, along with their 3-month-old daughter in a car seat, were thrown as the vehicle rolled; the car eventually came to rest on top of the father.

The crash also injured the 28-year-oldmother and the couple's four-year-old child.

Authorities did not release the names of the victims; the crash remains under investigation.

Officials did release preliminary details about the incident, stating the mother, who was driving the vehicle at the time, lost control after her husband reached over from the front passenger seat and grabbed the steering wheel.

The vehicle, a 2006 Pontiac Torrent, swerved across two lanes of traffic and veered off the right side of the road.

Police said via mLive that the wife tried to control the SUV, but it swerved back across the highway and hit a soggy median. The Torrent rolled twice, throwing the father through the sunroof and ejecting the infant in her car seat.

The SUV did not hit any other vehicles during the incident.

Authorities said the mother and her two children were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital. The father is listed in serious condition and is hospitalized at Mercy Health Mercy Campus in Muskegon.

Deputies did confirm that the couple's pitbull was uninjured in the crash and is currently being held at Mason County Animal Control.

Police say alcohol may be a factor in the rollover.

Authorities are collecting information about the crash and have asked witnesses to contact the Michigan State Police post in Hart at 231-873-2171.
