GROSSE POINTE WOODS (WWJ) -- It's been 12 years since the mysterious death of a Grosse Pointe Woods woman and her family is calling for justice.

JoAnn Matouk Romain, 55, disappeared in January 2010, and her body was found 70 days later in the Detroit River.

Police ruled it a suicide, but the family believes law enforcement is covering something up. Romain's oldest daughter, Michelle Matuok, told WWJ's Jason Scott that the agency doing the investigation is "unethical" and "sinister," adding that they themselves should be investigated.

Matouk also noted that the family has new evidence in the case of their mother's death.

"We are sitting on a bunch of information that suggests not only was my mom murdered but there's multiple suspects involved," said Matuok.

In order to bring their mother justice, the family started an online petition in hopes to collect more than 20,000 signatures. They are planning to use these signatures to help them get Attorney General Dana Nessel and the Department of Justice in Washington D.C. to look at the case.

"We're frustrated," said Scott Lewis, a private investigator. "We keep getting more information, but we don't have any place to take it because nobody in law enforcement seems to be interested in looking at this case -- and I'm very honestly baffled by that."

Lewis said this case is clearly a murder, but that conclusion hasn't been reached because he also believes police covered some things up.

"Here we are 13 years out and no justice at all," said Lewis. "So what we need is for somebody to come in and do a real investigation -- both on the way the police handled the case, and what happened to JoAnn Romain."
