FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) -- Farmington Hills Police are investigating after a man was killed by a family dog.
The 40-year-old victim, whose name has not been released, was found gravely injured Saturday evening by a family member who went to check on him after not hearing from him all day.
The family member went to the man's home, in the 22000 block of Elmgrove, where he found him unconscious on the ground in the backyard, with the dog "pulling at his body," according to police.
The family member managed to get the dog away from the man, called 911, and police arrived to find him unresponsive with what appeared to be severe dog bite injuries.
He was taken to a hospital where he later died.
An autopsy by the Oakland County Medical Examiner confirmed that the man was mauled to death by a dog, police said.
The dog, described as a "pit bull mix" was turned over to the Oakland County Animal Control Department.
Investigators are working with family members to find out if the dog had any previous history of aggression, or if the dog could have been labeled as a dangerous or potentially dangerous dog.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Farmington Hills Police Department at 248-871-2610.
