FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) A grandmother died in a “domestic violence-related homicide” in Farmington Hills, and her grandson is in custody, police said.

Farmington Hills Police said they were called to the scene on Middlebelt, between 14 Mile and Northwestern Highway, on Tuesday, June 30th around 7:30 a.m.

A caller from inside the home reported a “domestic dispute in progress” at the time.

Officers arrived and found a 78-year-old woman unconscious.

Authorities said her grandson, in his early 30s, briefly barricaded himself in the bedroom, unarmed. Police took him into custody.

The victim passed away from her injuries at the hospital, according to police.

“I don’t know that the suspect has offered to give any statements yet,” Farmington Hills Police Chief John Piggott told WWJ’s Jon Hewett. “He’s at the station. He’s being processed. So hopefully we’re able to get an answer to some of these questions.”

A motive remains unclear, but according to police, the grandson lived with his grandmother, along with one of his siblings.

Police said the preliminary investigation suggests a blunt object to the head caused her fatal injury. Her name was not released.
