FARMINGTON (WWJ) - A middle school student in the Farmington Public School District is the subject of a police investigation after the child allegedly brought a knife on school grounds and later pointed it at fellow classmates.
Jennifer Katz, the assistant principal for Power Middle School located off Gill Road in in between 9 and 8 Mile Roads in Farmington Hills, notified parents that the child involved in the Oct. 4 incident was removed from school and would not return until a full investigation is completed.
"I wanted to reach out to let you know it was reported to us that yesterday one of our students had a large knife on school grounds at an afternoon activity and also off of school property at a local establishment where students were congregating," Katz wrote on Thursday. "It was also reported that the student did point the knife at another student."
Katz said that the school's Resource Officer was notified of the incident and began to investigate. The student was not at school on Thursday and will remain out of class.
"Law enforcement is involved and all applicable laws and Student Code of Conduct regulations will be applied," the principal said.
"The safety and security of our students and staff is always our top priority and we are addressing this incident," Katz continued. "We are also thankful for the swift actions of our School Resource Office in investigating this situation."
The incident occurred the same day staff and students at neighboring Farmington High School were sent scrambling into a brief lockdown due to what police are calling a "code error."
Farmington police said there was no imminent threat to the school or any of its occupants and no one was injured.
An investigation is underway to determine what tripped the automated PA announcement that caused staff and students to take cover in classrooms and barricade interior doors.
