ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - Police are advising residents to avoid the area around an Ann Arbor hotel as they respond to a barricaded gunman situation allegedly involving a father and his young daughter on Wednesday morning.

Washtenaw County Spokesperson Derrick Jackson told WWJ's Terri Lee Chandler that one suspect surrendered just before 9 a.m. after he -- along with a second suspect -- allegedly kidnapped his 2-year-old daughter at gunpoint around 3:30 a.m. on Feb. 7.

According to the sheriff's department, deputies responded initially to a home in the 9000 block of Julie Drive after two suspects armed with guns forced their way into the residence, assaulted those inside and forcibly took the child.

One of those suspects was identified as the child's father.

Deputies were able to take the father to the Victory Inn Hotel in the 300 block of Washtenaw Ave. and Yost Blvd. near the U.S. 23 entrance/exit ramps, where he barricaded himself inside with his daughter.

There was a large police presence in the area with back roads and entrances to the hotel blocked off by personnel. The sheriff's office said there was no threat to the public, but advised residents to stay away from the area while they work the scene.

According to Jackson, the father of the child eventually surrendered to authorities. His 2-year-old child was in the room and unharmed.

Authorities are still working on identifying the second suspect allegedly involved in the original kidnapping.

At this time, police did not provide a motive as to why the man took his daughter. The incident remains under investigation at this time.
