FBI and ATF investigating after 'suspicious device' found in Wayne, prompting public safety alert on Sunday

WAYNE (WWJ) – Federal agents have joined an investigation in the city of Wayne where authorities say a "suspicious device" was found and defused on Sunday.

According to police, the package was found in the wheel well of a parked vehicle at around 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Gloria and Clinton streets, in the area of Van Born and Merriman Road.


Residents in the immediate area were evacuated by police, and the pubic was were asked to avoid the area of Gloria Street between Annapolis and Clinton Streets – near Van Born and Merriman Roads – while officers investigated.

The Wayne Police Department issued an urgent public safety alert around 4 p.m. Police officials said at 6:15 p.m. the investigation was expected to remain active for "a few hours."

"Residents in that area should leave the area immediately," officials said in the alert. "If you are in doubt, leave the area immediately."

The Detroit Metro Airport Bomb Squad responded and determined the device to be a credible threat, police said, and he homemade device was safely defused.

Wayne Police, the FBI and the ATF are investigating. No further details about the device have been released.

No injuries were reported.
