DETROIT (WWJ) – The FBI has joined the search for a missing Eastpointe teen who was last seen in Detroit in early January and a person of interest in the case has turned himself in after police publicly said they wanted to speak with him.
Authorities say 17-year-old Zion Foster was last seen getting into a car on Jan. 4 and she may have been spotted in the area of Greenfield and Lahser, on the city's west side.
Detroit Police Chief James White during a Wednesday news conference said authorities have located the vehicle she was seen in, but have not found Foster.
He said authorities had identified Jaylin Brazier as a person of interest in the case and wanted to talk to him. Police did not say exactly how Brazier was linked to the case.
Detroit police said on social media hours after the news conference that Brazier had turned himself in at a local precinct.
"We would like to know if he has seen her or if he has any information that could lead to her whereabouts," White said prior to Brazier turning himself in "Again, he is a person of interest. We have a number of questions for him and we'd like to talk to him as soon as possible."
White said Detroit police are leading the investigation because Foster was last seen in the city, but Eastpointe Police and federal agents are also working the case.
Last week Foster's mother said she had been receiving some "tips" on her daughters' whereabouts, but some people are preying on her family's desperation.
Ciera Milton said some "tips" mention her daughter being held hostage and others said she was going to be sold or killed. One text message even demanded money and Milton said she paid $200 because she was so desperate.
Foster is described as about 5-foot-1, 120 lbs. She was last seen wearing her work uniform for the Detroit Wing Company.
Anyone who has seen Foster or has information on her whereabouts is asked to call police in Detroit or Eastpointe.
