(WWJ) The FBI and State Police are searching for the person who placed explosive devices outside two cellphone stores in Northern Michigan.
Two devices were discovered Thursday, Sept. 16, at the stores located in Cheboygan and Sault Ste. Marie.
According to investigators, someone put the bombs inside USPS mail boxes, sealed then with black duck tape, and placed them outside the stores.
Officers and bomb technicians responded to both locations and rendered both devices safe.
No one was injured.
The FBI said the devices had threatening notes attached, addressed to Verizon and AT&T, and signed with the name "Handcuff Johnny" and "HJ." The letters claimed to be from the Coalition for Moral Telecommunications, with the letters “CMT” written on each box, officials said.
Police believe these devices are connected to a series of letters found at multiple tower sites in the Upper Peninsula last month, which made specific demands to telecommunications companies.
As the investigation continues, authorities are seeking tips from the public in this case.
Anyone with information should contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI. Anonymous tips can also be submitted online at tips.fbi.gov.
This investigation is being worked jointly by the FBI, Michigan State Police, Cheboygan Police Department, Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office, Sault Ste. Marie Police Department, and Sault Ste. Marie Tribal Police.
As a reminder, the FBI urged the public to remain vigilant and never touch, move or handle any suspicious or unknown packages. If you find something you think may be an explosives device, call your local police.
