Feds: Detroit City Councilman took $35,000 in bribes

(WWJ) There's new information in an alleged case of bribery involving Detroit City Councilman Andre Spivey.

According to a five-page document filed in federal court, Spivey and a worker in his office accepted $35,000 in bribes in an "unlawful conspiracy" running from 2009 to 2020. The document states that both Spivey and his office worker accepted the bribe payments with the intent to be influenced and rewarded in connection with upcoming votes on the Detroit City Council, as well as in subcommittees of the Council concerning an industry under review by the council.

Spivey's attorney has said the councilman did nothing wrong, and has been working with federal investigators over the past year to resolve the issue.

The councilman did not immediately comment on Wednesday's development.

Spivey represents the city’s District 4 and first was elected in 2009.
