SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- An Oakland County woman is facing federal charges after allegedly scamming the unemployment agency for hundreds of thousands of dollars during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced that 46-year-old Katrina Patrice Maddox, of Southfield, appeared in federal court Wednesday to face charges of mail fraud, wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for allegedly using other people's identities to file fraudulent unemployment claims.

Maddox allegedly used other people's identities to file more than 35 fraudulent unemployment claims from May 2020 through December 2021.

Officials stated that Maddox allegedly used the benefit debit cards to make court payments, order food through Door Dash and make cash withdrawals.

The DOJ believes Maddox received nearly $312,000 in benefits.
