(WWJ) A Fenton man is dead after police say he hit a deer on I-96, got out of his car on the freeway and was hit by a box truck.

According to officials with the Michigan State Police First District, the incident happened shortly before 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, along westbound I-96, east of the US 23 interchange.

A preliminary investigation found that the 28-year-old man was headed westbound on the freeway in a Ford Escape when he hit a deer. He didn't pull over but left his car stopped in the right lane and got out — likely to inspect the damage, police said,

At that time, a box truck headed westbound in the center lane moved to the right lane, got up to the stopped Escape and then swerved to avoid crashing into it, hitting the Escape driver who was on foot on the freeway.

MSP Brighton Post troopers responded, and the Escape driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released.

The box truck driver was not hurt, police said.

Westbound I-96 was closed for several hours for the on-scene investigation, but had since reopened.
