BIG RAPIDS (WWJ/AP) -- The Ferris State University professor who was suspended after his shocking video laced with profanities circulated across social media is threatening to sue the school if they don't quickly overturn his suspension.
An attorney for Mehler has threatened to file a lawsuit against Ferris State University in a letter on Tuesday saying the history teacher is protected by the First Amendment and a contract with the university and its faculty.
Charles Bacon, the president of the Ferris Faculty Association, said in a statement on Saturday the association considered the suspension to be an “attack on academic freedom” that suppressed intellectual discourse.
Mehler's tirade in the video -- which was uploaded on his Youtube page for his students to watch as their introduction video -- contained comments on grades, COVID-19 and class attendance during the pandemic.
In the video, Mehler called the students "vectors of disease." He also said that their grades are predetermined and if they have an issue with that to take it to God.
The professor was placed on leave at the start of the new term following the controversial video.
