BROWNSTOWN TWP. (WWJ) -- Dozens of cats are looking for their furr-ever home after being found inside a Brownstown Township residence.
Brownstown Township Director of Public Works Justin Danosky said Animal Control Officers rescued around 20 of the 50 cats from the house on Winwood Avenue.
"We received a call that they discovered a house probably from concerned neighbors that had cats in it," Danosky said.
"Our Animal Control Officers went over there and discovered there were about 50 cats. We managed to take 19 of them. Luckily, normally when you get hoarder cases, the cats are nasty, they're feral, sometimes they got to be put down. They're dirty, scabbed, aggressive. These cats were not that at all."
Danosky said all the cats, at worst, had ear mites, which is an easy treatment. The cats are said to be very social, like to cuddle and be held.
Danosky added the only problem is not having enough room in the shelter for all the cats.
Police said neighbors originally called to complain about the smell. When officers arrived on scene, they could see several cats through the window.
Animal Control is trying to work with rescues to get the cats out of the shelter.
Since the animals were relatively well taken care of and there were no other options, 30 of the cats remain in the house until space has cleared up for them at the shelter.
The owners were cited for having too many animals. Animal Control is working with the homeowner to remedy the situation.
