DETROIT (WWJ) -- Landlords in Detroit could be facing stiff penalties if they don’t clean up their buildings by today.
Detroit city officials say that starting on Tuesday, landlords who have refused to clean and sanitize their residential rental properties will be fined $250 per day until they make living conditions safe.
The move comes in an attempt to help protect those affected by the recent flooding that has plagued the greater Detroit area over the last several weeks.
On June 25 and 26, heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding in Wayne and Washtenaw Counties, leaving freeways underwater and damaging infrastructure and private property.
Last week, President Joe Biden approved Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's request for a Disaster Declaration, allowing federal aid to go to Wayne and Washtenaw Counties.
