Fire Chief: No gas leak, DTE conducting tests near Campus Martius Park

DETROIT (WWJ) - Fire officials in Detroit say monitor testing conducted by DTE prompted evacuations of homes and businesses in downtown Detroit Tuesday morning.

James Harris, Chief of Community Relations with the Detroit Fire Department, told WWJ that crews with DTE Energy were testing gas monitors in the area of Campus Martius Park when it get off a safety alert.

Harris confirmed there is no gas leak and people have been allowed back into their homes and businesses.

An earlier advisory from the Detroit Police Department's 3rd Precinct said buildings surrounding Campus Martius Park were evacuated "due to the strong smell of gas in the area."
