BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -- Nearly 24 hours after a fire was reported at the Oakland Hills Country Club, the building is still smoldering.
Fire crews are still on the scene at the historic Bloomfield Township clubhouse Friday morning, where WWJ reports smoke can still be seen coming out of the building -- which now without a roof and completely destroyed.
Drivers nearby can expect closures as police have blocked off Maple Road from Lahser to Telegraph.
An investigation is currently underway into the cause of the devastating fire. What's currently known is the flames began to engulf the attic at 9:30 a.m. Thursday before wreaking havoc throughout the entirety of the building, which is adorned with irreplaceable golf tournament memorabilia and art.
No injuries have been reported, but there are major losses in priceless material items. Firefighters and workers at the course were able to save some of the pieces, but much of it was lost.
But the president of the Oakland Hills Country Club, Rick Palmer, said they will rebuild the clubhouse.
"We are confident with our membership and our leadership and our team that we will come back, and we'll be stronger than ever," said Palmer.
Oakland Hills opened in 1916 and has hosted six U.S. Opens, a Ryder Cup and many other major tournaments. Golf legend Jack Nichlaus called it a sad day for the membership, but also for the countless people, like himself, who respect and appreciate Oakland Hills.
The 82-year-old said while the clubhouse can be rebuilt, it will be difficult to replace the many memories lost yesterday.
Nicklaus won two U.S. Senior Opens at Oakland Hills in 1981 and 1991.
