DETROIT (WWJ) — A Detroit mother and her son are looking for a place to go after a fire tore through their home in the Brightmoor neighborhood early Wednesday morning.

Flames and smoke were seen shooting from a bungalow on Lamphere of Lyndon, near Outer Drive and I-96.

The homeowner, Jacqueline Adams-Richie, told WWJ Newsradio 950’s Mike Campbell they were scrambling to get out.

“I just woke up my son and said get out the house. The house was engulfed with smoke,” she said, noting they had no place to go in the aftermath of the fire.

“I don’t know where I go from here,” she said.

Detroit Fire Department Battalion Chief Don Woods told Campbell despite what looks to be only exterior damage — including a burned hole above the front door — the damage is much worse inside.

“There could be some significant damage upstairs, but they did a really good job,” Woods said.

A cause of the fire is still under investigation.
