MARQUETTE (WWJ) - Some residents in the Upper Peninsula woke up to a thin layer of ice on their homes Friday morning, which officials say is the first reported frost in Michigan for the season.
Weather experts with the U.P.'s National Weather Service said frost dusted areas overnight with reports coming in from 15 miles southwest of Marquette.
"Quite a few interior locations dipped into the 30s last night," the NSW said on social media. "We received a report of frost on roofs near National Mine and it probably occurred elsewhere, too."
The NWS said frost will begin to form when the temperature falls below 36°F, especially in rural areas.
"It is a localized phenomena and can be quite variable across a small area," experts added.
According to NWS, temperatures got as low as 35° in the central and east sections of the U.P. as "high pressure and a dry air mass anchored over the Upper Great Lakes Region."
Users on social media expressed a range of emotions from delight to dismay over the announcement.
"Fall is coming early!" on user commented.
"Yikes to early for that," another wrote.
Either way, meteorologists said don't expect the frost to stick around as summer is still in full swing.
"Any frost early this morning will quickly burn off after daybreak," forecasters said. "Then plenty of sunshine and highs in the 70s can be expected today before showers and storms move into the U.P. from the west late this evening."
Temperatures in northern and central Lower Michigan also saw lows dip into the upper-30s, but no frost was reported.
Meanwhile, AccuWeather Meteorologist Dean Devore said it will be "gorgeous" in Metro Detroit on Friday with sunny skies and highs reaching 82° in the afternoon hours. Devore said clouds will move in later in the evening into the overnights hours as temperatures fall to a "comfortable" 59°.
Highs for Saturday will reach 74° as showers move into the area and continue through the night.
Showers will be spotty with some dry pockets throughout the day on Sunday with highs peaking at 72° to wrap up the weekend, Devore said.
