DETROIT (WWJ) — An elementary student from Fisher Magnet Lower Academy was found walking more than a half a mile away from the school on Friday when a good Samaritan — another mother — stopped to help the child.

As reported by WDIV, the young girl was found wandering near 7 Mile Road and Hayes Street with no adults around. A good Samaritan, also a mother, spotted the child, police said.

The woman immediately pulled over, picked up the girl up and drove to the Detroit Police Department's 9th Precinct.

Authorities said the first grader was held at the police station while they got ahold of her mother, who was in such disbelief she didn't believe police when she first answered her phone.

“'We have your daughter,’ they told me. I was like, ‘I know you’re lying. I walked her into school myself,’" the mother, who does not what to be identified, said to WDIV. "And I asked them to describe what she had on and they described it to a T."

The girl's mother went to the precinct where she was informed about how her child was found by the good Samaritan; she also learned the woman who picked up her daughter had posted about the experience on social media and shared a photo of the first-grader.

The girl's mother said she was irate with staff and officials at the school who she claims had no idea they had lost her child.

The mother called and made the school aware of the situation; she also spoke with DPSCD Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti, which prompted the school district to release the following statement on Friday evening as reported by WDIV:

“The District was notified by the authorities today that a Fisher Lower student was found approximately one mile from the school.

“The student was not properly escorted from the main office back to the classroom, instead the student left the building. The authorities notified the school and the student’s parent that the student was found safe.

“The District immediately launched an investigation and conferenced with the parent to review preliminary details surrounding the incident and to work collaboratively to strengthen the school-parent relationship, communication procedures, and safety practices at Fisher Lower.

“District protocols for handling this incident were not followed by school-based personnel and will be addressed internally.”
