(WWJ) We could see the first snowfall of the season in Southeast Michigan later this week. Are you ready?

AccuWeather says a big change in the weather is expected on Wednesday, and the snow could fall on Thursday in Metro Detroit, as high temperatures reach only around 40 degrees.

Forecasters say the winds will ramp up Wednesday and peak during Thursday and Friday. Waves may get very rough on the Great Lakes, and snow will arriver along with the cold air.

And as the cold air passes over the warm waters of the Great Lakes, lake effect snow will develop and could become locally heavy snow, AccuWeather says. Snow is also likely to develop farther south with the colder air over parts of the Ohio Valley.

While it's still a bit early to determine how much snow we will see in our area, AccuWeather says there are indications that a major storm will develop over the Great Lakes region.

"The more obvious conditions from the storm, depending on its intensity, will be a period of strong winds centered on the Great Lakes but expanding through much of the Midwest and into the East," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson said.

Ahead of the snow, Monday is looking mostly sunny and mild with a high in the upper 50s, while we're looking at some rain both Tuesday and Wednesday in the Detroit area. The forecasted high on Tuesday is 61 degrees, with Wednesday at little cooler at 53.
