LANSING (WWJ) More than one million Michiganders, or about one tenth of the state's total population, have entered the MI Shot to Win Sweepstakes—a lottery style raffle that gives vaccinated Michiganders a chance to win more than $5 million in cash or a combined total of half a million in college scholarships.

The sweepstakes includes thirty daily drawing prizes worth $50,000 for those who get their first dose during the dates of the sweepstakes (July 1-August 3). However, there is also a $1 million and $2 million drawing for anyone who received their shot between December 1, 2020 and July 30, 2021.

1,001,149 Michiganders have signed up as of Tuesday. The number has more than doubled since four days earlier.

The sweepstakes began Thursday, July 1 and ends on August 3, 2021. Eligibility criteria for each of the drawings is at: www.MIShotToWin.com.

The first round of winners, including the recipient of a $1 million drawing, will be publicly announced Monday (July 12.)

“The response by Michiganders to the MI Shot To Win Sweepstakes is outstanding,” Governor Gretchen Whitmer said in a release. “It’s exciting to see so many people signing up for the sweepstakes as they are the best messengers who can encourage their family and friends to get their COVID-19 vaccinations and help answer any questions they have about the process.”

As of Independence Day, the vaccination rate of Michiganders 16 or older stood at nearly 60%. The goal of the sweepstakes is to increase it to at least 70%. It follows in the footsteps of Ohio’s first-in-the-nation “Vax A Million” campaign, which raised the state vaccination by nearly 95%.

In addition to a combined total of 5 million in cash up for grabs, Michiganders 12 to 17 will be able to win up to 9 scholarships if their parents enter on their behalf. Each Scholarship Drawing prize consists of a four-year Michigan Education Trust (MET) charitable tuition contract (valued at $55,000) that may be used to pay for tuition and mandatory fees at a college or university
