MONROE (WWJ) - A parole absconder was taken into custody late Wednesday evening, but not without assaulting a corrections officer, ramming a vehicle and leading deputies on a chase through Monroe County, authorities said.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the 55-year-old fugitive from Monroe was wanted by the Michigan Department of Corrections and Michigan State Police for absconding from parole from a previous armed robbery conviction.

The man allegedly assaulted a MDOC employee before ramming a car and attempting to flee from police in a vehicle on Wednesday evening. Deputies joined the chase around 8:40 p.m. as a state trooper in an unmarked patrol car followed the man and updated local authorities on his location.

The sheriff's office said one of their deputies tried to pull the fugitive over at N. Dixie Highway near Hurd Road, but the man continued to flee and sped through neighborhoods in Frechtown Township before entering Monroe city limits.

Monroe police officers managed to puncture the tires of the fugitive's vehicle after setting up stop sticks. The man made it to the 15000 block of S. Dixie Highway in Monroe Township before he ditched the vehicle and began running from deputies.

The foot chase eventually ended with his capture, the sheriff's office said.

The fugitive's name has not been released pending his arraignment on additional charges related to Wednesday's incident.

The case remains under investigation by Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 734-240-7738.
