(WWJ) A Flint man was arrested in Northern Michigan this week after it's alleged he tried to scam an employee at a Family Dollar store.

The afternoon of Tuesday, April 9, Michigan State Police said a call came in about a suspect who'd left the Family Dollar in Vanderbilt, north of Gaylord, with more than $400 worth of stolen merchandise.

According to investigators, the young man had attempted to scam the clerk at the store. When the employee didn't fall for it, the suspect grabbed a Visa card loaded with $400, along with some other small items, and fled the store.

The clerk told police the suspect drove away in a silver Chevrolet, and was last seen headed toward I-75.

An MSP trooper spotted the vehicle on the southbound freeway near mile marker 280, pulled the 23-year-old driver over and took him into custody. The Visa card was found in the car and was recovered, police said.

MSP did not release any details about the scam itself.

The suspect was booked in the Otsego County Jail, while police said they're continuing to investigate whether the same man responsible for other scams at other area businesses.

Any local business owner or others who believe they were a victim of this suspect should call the MSP Gaylord Post at 989-732-2778.
