DETROIT (WWJ) - Former Detroit Lions linebacker and pass rusher Jessie Lemonier has died, the organization announced Thursday afternoon.
He was 25.
"We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of former Detroit Lion Jessie Lemonier," the Lions said on their social media page. "Jessie was a model teammate and wonderful young man who is gone are too soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time."
The cause of Lemonier's death has not been released.
Lemonier appeared in seven games with the Lions in 2021. He started his career in 2020 as an undrafted free agent from Liberty University before signing with the Los Angeles Chargers.
The 25-year-old was waived by the Chargers at the start of the 2021 season and was quickly snatched up by the Lions in September of the same year. He appeared on the practice squad before being promoted to the team's active roster, appearing in a number of games and starting in two of them.
His recorded 15 tackles and 1.5 sacks with Detroit.
Lemonier was initially re-signed with Detroit in April 2022, but was waived in May. He had recently signed with the USFL Birmingham Stallions.
