WAYNE COUNTY (WWJ) - A 23-year-old man from Roseville who was hit and killed while changing a flat tire on I-94 in northern Wayne County has been identified as a teacher for Fraser Public Schools, district officials said Wednesday.

According to administrators, Connor McMahon was a social studies teacher at Fraser Public High school, where he had also graduated from in 2017.

“Connor’s passing is a heartbreaking tragedy," principal Ryan Sines said in a statement one day after McMahon's death. "He just finished his first year as a social studies teacher at Fraser High School and was so excited to be teaching at his alma mater."

Sines went on to say McMahon "was always willing to go above and beyond for his colleagues and students, and will truly be missed by all who knew him."

Mental health support services will be provided to staff and students from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the counseling office at the high school.

"During this difficult time, we express our sympathies to his family and friends and ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers," district officials stated.

The statement from administrators came the day after Michigan State Police said they were called out to a two-vehicle crash reported on the eastbound lanes of the I-94 freeway near 8 Mile/Vernier in Harper Woods just before 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13th.

When troopers got to the scene, they discovered one driver had died while the other fled the area.

Based on their preliminary investigation, police said the victim, identified later as McMahon, had parked his vehicle on the right shoulder and was changing a flat tire when both he and his vehicle were hit by the suspect vehicle.

McMahon was killed at the scene as a result of the crash while the suspect driver took off.

Harper Woods police tracked down the suspect, a 25-year-old woman from Clinton Township, and arrested her a short while later after a brief foot chase.

She was then turned over to state troopers.

Troopers said on Wednesday morning that they were readying a search warrant for a blood draw on the suspect. At this time, it remains unclear if MSP suspects alcohol, drugs or speed were factors in the incident.

In addition to potential charges stemming from the fatal crash, police said they will pursue additional charges after she allegedly hurt a Harper Woods police officer and bit a state trooper.
