Work continues at site of gas main break at Troy construction, lanes closed on John R between Maple and Big Beaver

TROY (WWJ) --Repairs continue Wednesday morning in Troy, after a big gas main break at a busy intersection.

The public was asked to steer clear of the area — at the construction site of a new gas station on John R Rd. between Big Beaver (16 Mile Rd.) and Maple (15 Mile Rd) — after a gas line was hit by a construction crew in Troy on Tuesday, and crews worked through the night on repairs.

On Tuesday, John R. Rd. was completely closed between Maple and Big Beaver, but one lane is now reopened in each direction.

Reporting from the scene Tuesday afternoon, WWJ Newsradio 950's Tim Pamplin said a work crew was on the job at the site of a Kroger gas station under construction, when something went awry and they busted the gas line.

"You probably hear it in the background here, just hissing and making an awful sound," Pamplin reported. "I'm a good distance away, but this is very loud. Sounds like a jet engine roaring off in the distance."

"There's no flames, no smoke or anything, but the gas is pouring out, sending plumes of dust into the sky," Pamplin said.

Consumers Energy was notified and was responded to the scene, police said. There were no reports of evacuations or any injuries.

Traffic remains slow in the area.
