Gas main break at construction site shuts down John R Road in Troy, public urged to avoid the area

TROY (WWJ) -- The public was asked to steer clear of the area, after a gas line was hit by a construction crew in Troy on Tuesday.

As of mid-afternoon on Oct. 28, John R. Rd. was closed in both directions between 15 Mile and 16 Mile Roads.

Reporting from the scene, WWJ Newsradio 950's Tim Pamplin said a work crew was on the job at the site of a Kroger gas station under construction, when something went awry and they busted the gas line.

"You probably hear it in the background here, just hissing and making an awful sound," Pamplin reported. "I'm a good distance away, but this is very loud. Sounds like a jet engine roaring off in the distance."

"There's no flames, no smoke or anything, but the gas is pouring out, sending plumes of dust into the sky," Pamplin said.

Consumers Energy was notified and was responding to the scene, police said. There have been no reports of evacuations or any injuries.

Due to the gas main break, Troy Police said John R would be closed in both directions between Maple Road (15 Mile) and Big Beaver Road (16 Mile). "Please avoid the area and use alternate routes," police added.
