(WWJ) — It's a record no driver wants to hear as the average cost for a gallon of gas skyrocketed overnight — especially when it goes and shatters the record high for gas prices set the previous day.

AAA reports gas prices throughout Michigan are officially over $5 a gallon with some gas stations posting prices way above that. The price for a gallon of gas now averages $5.02 a gallon — a 46 cent jump over prices a week ago.

AAA said they are seeing prices as high as $5.29 a gallon at some stations in the Metro area. Other stations are clinging to prices lower than $5; one of the lowest prices seen in the area was for 4.89 at the corner of Inkster and Seven Mile in Redford.

Many in Michigan and beyond are frustrated every time they fill up at the pump.

"I try to fill up as frequently as I can for the cheapest ones I can find," one driver said to WWJ. "It's more than a $100 to fill up half a tank in the truck. Sometimes it really sucks."

"Gas is ridiculous," a woman vented at the pump.

"I'm not going very far," another driver admitted. "Not as far as I used to."

"I mean how do they expect us to get from point A to point B?"

In the summer of 2021, gas prices in Michigan were at 3.02 a gallon. Oil analysts warned drivers that they should not expect prices to drop anytime soon.

Analysts say the increase is due to the summer demand as well as fallout from the war in Ukraine and a cap on oil production worked out by Russia and Saudi Arabia.
