Gas wars in Warren: Sheetz and Speedway stations lure customers with prices under $2 per gallon

WARREN (WWJ) -- Gas is already at under $3 per gallon all across Michigan, but a couple of gas stations in Macomb County are getting some attention for bringing prices even lower.

WWJ's Charlie Langton reports there's a gas war going on in Warren, where Sheetz was selling regular gas for $1.79 a gallon on Tuesday, at the new location on Van Dyke Ave., south of 14 Mile Rd.

The price is back up a bit at that Sheetz ($2.39 at last check), but the Speedway station next door then set its price at $1.79, early Wednesday morning.

"And there are a lot of people pulling into the Speedway," Langton reported, at 6 a.m. "In fact — if you know how to work the system and if you've got a Speedway card — it goes down to $1.68 a-gallon."

Mr. Brown, who was filling up at the Speedway, was happy to get a good deal, telling Langton: "It's hard for people out here right now, you know?"

At one point, Brown said, the price was way down at $1.30.

This all comes as there's chatter about Sheetz potentially taking away business from other local stations, as the Pennsylvania-based company implements an ambitious expansion plan in the Metro Detroit region.

Sheetz currently has four open locations in Michigan: two in Romulus, one in Chesterfield and one in Warren, with a second Warren location under construction at Mound and 12 Mile roads. Several more are planned, including in Macomb, Farmington Hills and Novi.

According to GasBuddy, com, the average gas price in Macomb County (as of mid-morning on Wednesday) was just over $2.82 per gallon for regular. Check the map at this link.
